Portland is a city of many micro-neighborhoods, each with its own distinct personality. Some are bustling and trendy, others historic and serene. But Kenton? Kenton is a little bit of everything—a true hidden gem in North Portland that blends small-town warmth with urban accessibility. Whether you’re considering a move to Kenton or just looking for a new corner of the city to explore, this guide will give you the full scoop on what makes this neighborhood so special.

A Little Kenton History

Kenton’s roots date back to the early 1900s, when it was a company town built around the meatpacking industry. Swift Meat Packing Company was the major employer in the area, drawing workers and their families to settle nearby. This history is still visible in Kenton’s architecture, including charming early 20th-century homes and historic commercial buildings.

One of Kenton’s most famous landmarks, the Paul Bunyan statue, was installed in 1959 to celebrate Oregon’s centennial. Standing 31 feet tall, this roadside attraction is now a designated historic landmark and a beloved symbol of the neighborhood.

A Walkable, Bike-Friendly, and Community-Oriented Vibe

Kenton’s downtown core along N Denver Avenue is compact, walkable, and lined with independent businesses. It’s a neighborhood where people know their baristas by name, kids ride bikes to the park, and neighbors chat on front porches. The area has seen a lot of revitalization over the past decade but has maintained its friendly, down-to-earth character.

Public transit access is a major plus here. The MAX Yellow Line runs straight through Kenton, making it easy to get to downtown Portland without needing a car. The neighborhood is also highly bike-friendly, with plenty of cycling infrastructure that connects to other parts of the city.

Where to Eat, Drink, and Explore

If you’re looking for a great cup of coffee, Presso Coffee Bar is a cozy favorite, known for its expertly crafted espresso drinks and stylish atmosphere.

For dining, Northport is the newest eatery (taking over the spot once inhabited by the popular Swift + Union).  I have my eye on the chilaquiles verdes for brunch (holy wow do these look scrumptious). If you’re craving something plant-based, Cultured Kindness is a charming vegan cheese shop that also serves up amazing sandwiches and small bites. And if burgers are calling your name, Kenton Station has you covered with delicious pub fare and a laid-back, family-friendly vibe.

Local shopping in Kenton is equally delightful. Give & Take Resale is a fantastic spot to find vintage home goods, clothing, and quirky Portland-style treasures. Magic lovers will appreciate Woo PDX, a tiny but well-curated shop with a great selection of  crystals, books and gifts (plus tarot readings!).  One of the most chic home stores in Portland, Mantel is a MUST (and one of my personal favorites for well-curated home goods and gifts).

Outdoor enthusiasts will love Kenton Park, a spacious green space with a playground, picnic tables, and walking paths. It’s a perfect spot for a morning jog or a lazy afternoon in the sun. If you’re up for a bit more adventure, the Columbia Slough trails and Smith and Bybee Wetlands are just a short drive or bike ride away, offering some of the best birdwatching and wildlife spotting in the city.

The Real Estate Scene in Kenton

Kenton has become increasingly desirable in recent years, thanks to its affordability relative to other close-in Portland neighborhoods. The area is a mix of charming bungalows, mid-century homes, and newer infill construction.

As of early December 2024, the median home price in Kenton hovers around $466,000, making it one of the more accessible neighborhoods in North Portland. Inventory remains relatively tight, with homes often receiving multiple offers, especially for well-maintained properties with updated interiors.

Buyers are drawn to Kenton for its community feel, historic charm, and easy commute options. If you’re considering making a move, it’s a great time to explore what’s available before prices rise further as demand continues to grow.

Have I Piqued Your Curiosity?

Kenton is one of those rare Portland neighborhoods that balances charm, history, and convenience. Whether you’re drawn to its small-business scene, the walkable streets, or the strong sense of community, this is a place where you can put down roots and feel at home.

If you’re curious about real estate opportunities in Kenton or want to learn more about what makes this neighborhood special, I’d love to chat! Let’s grab a coffee at Presso and talk about your home-buying goals (my treat!).
